Youngeun Art Museum host the exhibition 'Light to light(Lumière née de la lumière)' with the Renuchi Museum in Paris, France from Oct 5, 2019 to Jan 12, 2020. The exhibition is designed with respect for Bang Hai-ja, who has been working on her work in her unique formative language for more than six decades. She is a prolific artist who has been in and out of France and South Korea since the 1961, and has hosted more than 100 individual exhibitions in various places around the world as well as an artist who has been a creative studio resident in Youngeun Art Museum over 19 years, and been a representative of modern Korean art. The exhibition is being held in conjunction with an exhibition at the Renuchi Museum in Paris, France, and is the first time in Korea that a model of a half-size northern window 「The Birth of Light」 is among four stained glass windows to be installed in the religious memorial chamber of the Chartres Cathedral, which represents France. Mael Bellec, a commissioner of the 『Et la matière devint lumière : Bang Hai-ja』, Special Exhibition held at the Renuchi Museum from Jan 17 to May 5, 2019, said in his preface of the exhibition, "She has played a central role in the cultural exchange between France and Korea, and is exploring materiality, natural color pigments and painting techniques to express joy and beauty around in original creations." The Chartre Cathedral is called a Gothic masterpiece and is a UNESCO World Heritage site, where more than 1 million tourists and 250,000 pilgrims visit each year. The 12th and 13th century stained glass windows are well preserved and there are about 172 pieces of stained glass that decorate the cathedral. It has held stained glass creations to keep the tradition in 2018 and incorporate contemporary art. In response of suggestion from German workshop, she exhibited and was finally selected after a six-month review by 18 judges. Her stained glass contains messages of light, life, love and peace. Ms. Bang said, "Light is life, life is love, love is peace. Think about the first light of mankind. The beginning of the world, opening of the sky and the origin light soared, embracing all life, would have been glorious indeed. I want to capture the warmth of light, the eternality of light, the brilliance of light, the light that has been the source of life from the beginning of the world, on the screen." The exhibition also features the unique affection and long-standing efforts of her about stained glass. With the educational purpose of changing and expanding the stereotypes of stained glass, Jo Kyu-seok from Hairi Art Villege and prof.Jung Su-kyoung from Incheon Catholic University who introduced Ms.Bang to German workshop will be together in a meeting with her. She said, "The universe is made up of light, energy, color, and we come from light and then we go back to light. I hope that light is life, life is love, love is peace, and it will be a small seed involving this message of light." Through stained glass and sculptures on display this time, we hope to experience our own inner light by delivering a true message of light, the source of all life.
